In an inspiring feat of endurance, 82-year-old Dave McClung from Olathe, Kansas, has achieved a remarkable milestone — becoming the oldest known person to trek to the Mount Everest South Base Camp in Nepal.
McClung and his 55-year-old son, Dennis McClung, embarked on an eight-day expedition, reaching the South Base Camp at an altitude of 17,600 feet (5,364 meters) on October 19.
> “I’ve always believed that adventure doesn’t have an expiration date,” McClung said. “This hike wasn’t about me — it’s about showing my children, grandchildren, and others that life should be lived to the fullest at every stage.”
The Everest Base Camp trek spans roughly 80 miles round trip and serves as the starting point for climbers attempting to summit Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters) — the world’s tallest mountain.
October marks Nepal’s busiest trekking season, and McClung’s accomplishment stands out amid recent cyclone warnings and snowfall in the region. Despite challenging weather, the McClungs’ determination and preparation ensured a safe and successful journey.
The Nepal Tourism Board lauded McClung’s record-breaking trek as a “symbol of lifelong adventure and perseverance.”
