Apa Sherpa, famed for his record number of Everest ascents, said his recent a feat of conquering the world’s highest peak for the 16th time had partly to do with his zeal to maintain his feat and to ensure that his team members succeeded in their climbing mission. He added that he plans to continue climbing as long as his health is fine.
“I decided to scale the peak to make sure my team members successfully conquered Everest and also to maintain my record climbs,” Apa told this daily. Since he is physically fit and will have been bored staying at Everest Base Camp, he decided aginast stay back in the base camp , according to him.
Being a Sirdar (head mountain guide) of the American expedition ‘Team No Limits 2006’, he did not really have to go up; he could have monitored the team’s activities from the Base Camp.
On his wife’s pressuring him to give up climbing, he said, “My wife and family members had no idea I planned to climb the peak this time. She came to know about it after I broke my record.”
When he got back from the mountain, “there was no room for argument.. He returned to the capital this morning after his feat on Everest.
While scaling the peak, he said that he came across the body of a climber in Camp III. He found the peak much cleaner compared with last year thanks to the clean-up campaigns and expedition teams efforts’ to carry back their own garbage.
“All teams must do their bid in keeping the mountains clean by bringing back their garbage,” he said. Apa rewrote history on May 19 by scaling Everest for the 16th time thereby breaking his own record for the fifth consecutive year.
