Chicken products safe, says Sarlahi Livestock Office
District Livestock Office, Sarlahi, has said eggs and other chicken products are safe for consumption.
The office has made it clear that no instance of bird flu virus has been detected in Nepal even as the sale of chicken products in the district was down during the Holi festival. Proprietor of Everest Poultry Farm at Malangwa, Nareshranjan Das, said that as compared to the previous year, the sale of chicken products this year was down by as much as 75 per cent.
Ten per cent of chicken products in the district are imported from India, 25% from Chitwan, while the rest of the demand is met by domestic suppliers.
According to available data, 250 kg of chicken meat was sold in markets at Malangwa, Barahathawa, Ishworpur, Hariwan and Lalbandi daily before the news of bird flu spread. Since, the sales have gone down drastically.
Though the Livestock Quarantine Checkpost has banned the import of chicken products, they are being smuggled in. For the same reason even the sale of chicken products produced locally has gone down. Rumours of bird flu has noticeably reduced the consumption of local chicken, said Rajkumar Raya, a poultry farmer of Masauli VDC- 4.
After the news of import of bird flu from India spread, 11,600 chicken of 24 farms in the district were checked. However, no bird flu has been discovered, Dr Sushil Kumar Adhikari of the Livestock Office said.
