Police fire tear gas, water cannons as demonstrations escalate in Baneshwor KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 8 Gen Z protesters stormed the Federal Parliament premises in New Baneshwor on Monday after breaking through police barricades and climbing over gates. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators, who had pledged earlier to remain peaceful. NHRC urges authorities to halt excessive force against Gen Z protesters Curfew imposed in Butwal–Bhairahawa amid escalating Gen Z protests The Kathmandu District Administration Office imposed a curfew from 12:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in key areas around Baneshwor after the situation escalated. According to the curfew notice signed by Chief District Officer Chhabi Rijal said the decision was taken according to the article 6 (A) of Local Administration Act, 2028. The curfew covers New Baneshwor Chowk westward to Bijulibazar bridge along the Everest Hotel, eastward to Tinkune Chowk along the Min Bhawan, Shantinagar; northward to Ratna Rajya Secondary School along the Iplex Mal; and southward to Shankhamul bridge. Protesters from the Gen Z generation (born 1997–2012) have been demonstrating in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, Biratnagar, and other cities against corruption and the government's decision to shut down social media. At Baneshwor, some youths were seen climbing onto the police guard house before security forces fired tear gas. Authorities are continuing efforts to remove demonstrators attempting to enter the Parliament building.
