The renowned climber was returning from the summit when the incident occurred.
"Efforts are underway to bring his body to Kathmandu," he added.
Bhattacharya, a resident of Joypurbil in West Bengal's Howrah district, had climbed Mt Everest in 2011 and Mt Kanchenjunga in 2013.
Mt Dhaulagiri had witnessed its first summit of the season after four foreigners and a Sherpa guide, locally managed by Seven Summit Treks, made it to the top of the peak, Sherpa informed.
