Lurie in Nepal on ‘Uniting’ effort KATHMANDU: World-renowned artist and political cartoonist Ranan Lurie arrived in Kathmandu on November 10. Lurie has been described by the Guinness Book of World Record as “the most widely syndicated political cartoonist in the world” as his work has been published in 1,105 newspapers in 103 countries. He has created around 11,000 political cartoon commentaries regarding almost all major political, social, economic and military incidents, which took place in the last 58 years. In addition to this, he has also published 10 cartoon art books, one novel and created around 2,000 paintings and 28 sculptures. Lurie is in Nepal as a part of his plan to spread this unique art — The Uniting Painting — to the Everest. He wants to put up an actual canvas brought from the UN on the peak of Everest, as he believes that the Everest is the next source on the uniting painting that will embrace world under the umbrella of art. Rakesh Hamal, Chairman, National Rehabilitation Society for the Disabled, who is coordinating the event, said that Lurie has arrived in Nepal and will start his series of meetings with political leaders from November 11. This multi-talented artist began a one of a kind art venture in 1968 at his studio in Connecticut. The painting which is now known as ‘The Uniting Painting’ was unveiled for the first time at the United Nations in New York in 2005. This is the first one man’s art show to be exhibited at UN and is 600 feet long, starting at a height of 75 feet of the ceiling of the art gallery at UN’s main visitors’ lobby. The painting now has already extended to Manhattan, Connecticut and Roosevelt Island and the painting also exists in South Korea.
