KATHMANDU: The weekend looks a little too busy for all the movie buffs of the city — a brand new Hollywood release will be hittings the theatres near you, a one-day documentary film festival and an Oscar-winning movie. It’s your pick. Have fun. Curious George, the original “monkey see, monkey do” chimp, is an inquisitive little guy with an insatiable taste for adventure. This all-new animated adventure film is based upon the beloved tales that have been enchanting readers for over 60 years. Matthew O’Callaghan directs from a screenplay by Ken Kaufman (story by Ken Kaufman and Mike Werb). Will Ferrell lends his voice to The Man with the Yellow Hat. Dick Van Dyke, Drew Barrymore, David Cross, Eugene Levy and Joan Plowright are also among the distinguished cast of voices. Original songs are written and performed by Jack Johnson. Call 444 2220 for details. The American Movie Month will come to an end on March 31 with the screening of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? at the American library at 9:00 am. Old-line liberals Matt and Christina Drayton (Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn) have raised their daughter Joey (Katharine Houghton) to think for herself and not blindly conform to the conventional. Still, they aren’t prepared for the shock when she returns home from a vacation with a new fiancé: African-American doctor John Prentice (Sidney Poitier). While they come to grips with whatever prejudices they might still harbour, the younger folks must also contend with John’s parents (Roy Glenn Sr and Beah Richards), who are dead-set against the union. The film was a success in the racially volatile year and nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won for Hepburn and screenwriter William Rose. The Pharping Documentary Film Fest is to be held on April 1 at the Sheetal hall, Pharping. Documentary films by Nepali and foreign filmmakers will be screened then. The fest is being organised by Camel Inc, a group of documentary enthusiasts, and Shirakhapur Community Campus. The fest will begin at 10:00 am and tickets have been priced at Rs 10 per screening.
