Nepali mission celebrates Loktantra Day in India
NEW DELHI: Nepali Embassy in India celebrated Loktantra Diwas (Democracy Day) amidst a function organised here on Friday. Students, intellectuals and representatives of Nepali diaspora associations took part in the ceremony.
Deputy chief of mission Khush Narayan Shrestha, who is also the acting Nepali Ambassador to India, said the embassy was ready to provide all kinds of support to Nepali nationals living in India.
He also said the embassy wanted to have an interaction with the diaspora associations in order to chalk out plans that could help the embassy better serve the Nepali nationals.
Speaking on the occasion, Yubaraj Baral, general secretary of the Everest Chamber of Commence, an umbrella organisations of Nepali business community in India, criticised the Nepali politicians for not making genuine efforts to ameliorate the plight of Nepali people.
He also said a lot of Nepali traders wanted to invest in the country but they had not been able to do so because of the lack of investment-friendly environment in the country. Baral urged the embassy officials to make sure every service-seekers's genuine concerns were duly addressed.
Uddhav Pyakurel, a PhD fellow at Jawaharlal Nehru University, said, "True democracy means supremacy of the people. But in Nepal it seems that the government is being dictated by People Liberation Army combatants." He further added that thousands of Nepali migrant labourers had not been able to return home due to prolonged strikes across the country.
President of Pravasi Nepali Sangh Khem Chandra Dhakal said the ongoing strikes across the Tarai had taken its toll on the nation's economy.
He also called on the political parties to be honest in putting an end to the culture of bandhs and other forms of strikes.
Govinda Pokharel, general secretary of the Nepali Congress affiliated Nepali Janasamparka Samiti said the Nepali people were yet to get any benefits of democracy despite fighting for it for more than six decades.
Madhu Chhetri, an advisor to the Rastriya Janamoracha affiliated Mulprabaha Nepali Sangh, opposed federalism in Nepal and said that it could disintegrate the country.
Earlier, the participants planted saplings in the embassy premises to mark the Loktantra Diwas. To mark the day, a group of Nepali students at Jawaharlal Nehru University hosted a tea reception today.
