Nepal's mountaineer Sherchan eyes Everest crown at mid-80s KATHMANDU:Age does not seem to be a restraint to Nepal's 85-year-old Min Bahadur Sherchan, who once wore the crown of the world's oldest Mt Everest conqueror. He is all set to make a fresh attempt to summit the world's highest mountain with full confidence once again, the Agence France Presse reported from Kathmandu. Born in June 1931 in Myagdi district of western Nepal, the former British Gurkha soldier had stood atop the 8,848-metre mountain in May 2008 at the age of 76 years and 340 days, breaking the record set by Japanese mountaineer Yuchira Miura the same year. Sherchan, however, had to fight a battle for over a year to get his feat officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Record. He was handed over the GBWR certificate in November 2009 only. In what appeared to be a Himalayan rivalry, Miura reclaimed the crown from Sherchan in May 2013 at the age of 80. "My aim is not to break anybody's record, this is not a personal competition between individuals. I wish to break my own record," Sherchan told AFP in Kathmandu. "By climbing the Everest at this age I want to boost self-confidence of elderly people, inspire new generations and establish a proud identity for Nepal," the report quoted Sherchan as saying. "The gods should help with the weather and keep me well. I have no diseases, I've always been healthy. My age will not stop me." In 2009, Sherchan had announced to make an ascend of the highest peak once again when he would turn 84. "The age of 84 is considered the incarnation of 'living God' in Nepal," Sherchan had said at a felicitation programme in presence of then Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. Sherchan had to give up his expedition in the wake of April 2015 earthquake that triggered avalanche in the Mt Everest and killed scores of mountaineers.
