Not Just Everest — A New Generation of Climbers is Chasing Untouched Summits Across Nepal

Category: Travel October 24, 2025 Nepal – Hidden Peaks

Nepal’s hidden summits are attracting a new generation of climbers seeking adventure beyond Everest.

Nepal’s mountains, including Everest, have long drawn climbers from around the world. However, a growing number of mountaineers are exploring hidden summits that promise solitude and the thrill of being first to the top.

The Himalayan nation hosts eight of the world’s ten highest peaks, attracting hundreds of climbers annually. While Everest and other 8,000-meter giants dominate commercial expeditions, new adventurers are shifting focus to numerous 6,000- and 7,000-meter summits. Of Nepal’s 462 climbable peaks, around 100 have never been summited.

Alpine-Style Climbing:
Many of these smaller expeditions, including French, Japanese, and Swiss teams, are tackling peaks in alpine style — carrying all gear themselves, without supplementary oxygen or fixed ropes. This style emphasizes self-reliance, skill, and adventure.

French mountaineers Benjamin Vedrines and Nicolas Jean recently completed the first ascent of 7,468m Jannu East, highlighting the potential of Nepal’s lesser-known mountains.

Sustainability and New Tourism Opportunities:
The shift toward remote peaks also addresses overcrowding and commercialization on Everest. By waiving climbing fees for 97 mountains, Nepal’s tourism department encourages exploration of hidden regions, spreading economic benefits to remote communities.

Nepali guides like Vinayak Malla note that access is often the real challenge due to remoteness and infrastructure limits. However, small expeditions also bring tourism income to previously overlooked valleys.

Why Adventure Seekers Should Explore Nepal’s Hidden Peaks:
Nepal’s mid-range mountains provide untouched landscapes, technical challenges, and sustainable tourism opportunities. Climbers enjoy authentic alpine adventures while contributing to local economies and promoting eco-tourism.
