KATHMANDU: A Nepali Sherpa climber died while falling into a crevasse on Mt Cho Oyu in Tibet yesterday, according to the expedition organiser.
Murari Sharma, Managing Director at Everest Pariwar Treks, said that Phujung Bhote Sherpa of Makalu, Sankhuwasabha slipped into crevasse and plunged to his death near Camp II in the world’s sixth highest mountain.
The incident occurred when Sherpa along with other members was fixing rope to Camp II from Camp I in the 8,188-metre peak on Monday, Sharma quoted the team leader Martin Szwed as saying.
“Efforts are underway to recover his body,” Sharma said. A team of 10 foreign climbers led by German mountaineer along with five climbing Sherpas from Everest Pariwar Treks reached the base camp to attempt climb Mt Cho Oyu this season, he added.
