The participants included Jung Byung Sun, a journalist with The Chosun Ilbo; Kim Woiyong, CEO of Yongbang Logistics; and Lee Jeongcheol, CEO of Gwayeon Hanwoo. All three are active supporters of the Um Hong-Gil Human Foundation (UHGHF), a Korea-based international non-governmental organization working to promote inclusive and sustainable quality education for marginalized children in Nepal's underserved regions, according to the press release issued by the UHGHF.
According to the UHGHF, Kim Woiyong has been a key donor for the expansion and reconstruction of the Um Hong-Gil Human School in Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. The school now provides a safe, child-friendly learning environment for around 300 students.
The trio's participation in this year's marathon was inspired by their visit to the Lumbini-based school last year, during which renowned South Korean mountaineer Captain Um Hong-Gil encouraged them to take part in the Everest Marathon, the foundation said in a statement.
Following the race, Jung Byung Sun remarked, "It was my dream to complete one of the world's top five extreme marathons and to inspire hope and courage among Korean youth. I'm proud that all of us completed the race successfully. I will continue to work towards strengthening people-to-people diplomacy between Korea and Nepal."
