The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) collected a total of 77,191 kgs (roughly 85 tons) of waste from Everest Base Camp (EBC) during the Spring 2024 climbing season. Similarly, 27,533 kgs of the garbage was human waste while 14,150 kgs was kitchen waste. Following the collection, the human waste and kitchen waste have been transported to a safe disposal site near Gorakshep. Meanwhile, all burnable and recyclable garbage has been transported to the SPCC's waste management facility at Namche for further processing and disposal. The recyclable garbage will then be transported to Kathmandu for recycling. SPCC's Chairman Lama Kazi Sherpa expressed his heartfelt thanks to all expedition operators, guides, and climbers for their cooperation in keeping the Everest Base Camp clean. Since 2016, SPCC has been collecting recyclable waste separately and transporting it to Kathmandu for proper recycling, SPCC's Chief Executive Officer Tshering Sherpa said. He added that their social mobilizers have been working tirelessly with local partners in various settlements to segregate and collect recyclables. "This week, SPCC's social mobilizers, Pemba Yangji and Chhewang Palmu, coordinated the collection, packaging, and transportation of 700 kg of tins and cans from Machermo to our storehouse in Syangboche," Sherpa added.
