Tibetan protesters storm UN complex Tibetan protesters barged into UN compound in Lalitpur today to deliver an appeal to the world body urging it to pressure China to end its crackdown in Tibet, officials said. It was the second time in a month that Tibetan protesters had succeeded in gaining entrance to the tightly guarded compound, officials said. “Nine Tibetan protesters rushed into the UN compound after the main gate was opened to let in a UN vehicle,” UN spokesman John Brittan said. The protesters left the premises after handing over their appeal, officials said. “We asked for UN support to put pressure on China for human rights in Tibet and to free all political prisoners,” activist Nima Dolkar said. The protesters entered the compound after police said over 50 protesters were held earlier in the day when police broke up a rally near Chinese embassy. The protesters tried to run towards the embassy compound but were blocked by police. At least three protesters were bleeding from their noses and mouths after police beat them up. Meanwhile, the Home Ministry today said appropriate security measures had been adopted to prevent any untoward incident taking place on Nepali soil in connection with China lighting the Olympic torch on Mt Everest. Issuing a press statement today, the ministry said that its attention had been drawn towards some of the media disseminating fabricated and exaggerated news that the security personnel had been issued shoot at sight orders to prevent anti-China activities from taking place on Nepali soil.
